Daniele confesses affection for an unknown lover who may or may not even be aware of his own existence. With admirable consistency in the style of writing and literary devices that Daniele employed, he evokes feelings that are best comprehended in one's heart. His words draw imageries and scenes of the torture in love as well as the pleasure in love. In "Chants for Love" you will find undiluted humor, for example; in Chant no. 56 "Every artist needs a muse" (page 41). In this poem, the persona says how his enchantment and imagination for this lover makes him "mix up the vinegar and the rose water" in the kitchen. Because he is lost in his imagination of his lover eating his meal gracefully, he thinks that what he cooks is perfect. Now, he has been banished from the kitchen. Only love can blind a person to see the night as day and the moon as the sun! Another poem that I admired helplessly is Chant no. 113 "As if we did not care much" (Page 121). Daniele writes in the second stanza; "Our love is like that sudden inspiration taking shape, each detail crisply defined, but you are falling asleep, so you decide you will write it down in the morning, but when you wake up you only remember how good it was..." I found this stanza very relatable as a writer because I still mourn the poems that I have lost to the event that stanza describes. Daniele portrays wits and wisdom necessary for discerning the weight between one's love for God and deep affection for a significant other. He also writes about the hate and troubles that may arise as a result of waiting for the right lover to come. Daniele's "Chants for Love" is similar to Pyrokardia's books; "A Beautiful Mess" and "Broken Wishbones and Empty Spaces." These three books are filled with the pains and blessings of love and of loving. I enjoyed every bit of "Chants for Love". Click to purchase a copy of Chants for Love Comments are closed.
