I Am The Ocean

"Some of us become the ocean because we don't want anyone to own us."

Excerpt from To Bee a Honey (Page 115)

This is an excerpt from To Bee a Honey. In many ways, this book is personal and if I could describe it in one word, I will say that it is honest.

This excerpt stemmed from my experiences after immigrating from Nigeria to America. I quickly learned how to raise my head high because I was tired of allowing circumstances and perhaps people to set low expectations for me.

I always ask myself, where do I have control?

I realized that people treat me, not just based on their perception of who I am but how I present myself to be perceived. So I became an ocean and involved myself in activities that allowed me to grow and spread my territory. I don't like being in places that does not cause me to change positively and evidently. I don't rely on my words to describe growth but my actions and reality because I like evidence. I like see proof that something somewhere has increased.

This excerpt is not focused on the person or situation that tries to control, own and limit you. It is focused on your power over yourself to grow and become a never ending experience.
Be consistent in your growth and there is never a peak to it... Soon all those limitations will be like a grain of sand at the seashore.

A person that I always think of concerning this idea is Anita Ogbonna, author of Letters to Mama. I love her so much, because she is the type of person and woman that carries herself with high esteem and expectations as sampled in her book
Letters to Mama
