Things I Would Not Say In Church

4/1/2017

Out of curiosity and because of my educational requirements, this semester, I decided to take a 'Sociology of religion' class. The major impact that the class has on me so far is that it has made me feel less guilty about my criticisms of religion and it has satisfied my curiosity of whys and hows. It doesn't provide an accurate answer that I can fall for, but it gives an organized and less spiritual perspective which deducts the fear that we have all been socialized with.

I have always heard stories of people who took classes that give analysis of religion or contradicts religion and how it changed their perspective of faith and belief.

In the hilarious sense, it feels like therapy. It is a confidential space where I can say the things that I would not say in church (don't ask me), or even, think about some things that I would not consider on a normal day. It brings my attention to how religion controls the outcome of the societies in which it is present. It gives a strangers eyes to analyze different practices of religion.

Before you think of giving me any unsolicited sermon, from my notice, this class only appeals to my curiosity, criticisms, and certain feelings or thoughts that I have towards religion. It does not intend to appeal to my belief or hope or sense of spirituality and I understand that. I made a clear distinction of where to look for which appeals.

If you will ever take a class like this, my suggestion will be that you should seize the opportunity to empty your system and bowels of criticisms and strange perspectives (or bullshits) within that circle. It is a rare opportunity especially with our societies becoming more religious than ever.

Most importantly, if you are serious about your faith, just let few folks know that you are taking a course like that and ask them to check on you and your status of faith or belief at intervals.
