Achieving My Goals

9/22/2017

When I am working towards achieving my goal, my focus is on what I can do from here onward. Even when I make a mistake I say to myself, "Okay, that's gone, what next?" I review my progress and I keep my eyes on the goal. I also talk about my goals with my mentors, friends, and family. This is also a way to stay motivated because I know that if I slack, the people that know my goals will question me.

Recently, I checked through a list that I wrote in December 2016. It is a list of all the things that I wish to achieve by the end of 2017. I was very excited to review that list because I have achieved 75% of it. For the things that I achieved, I saw a similar pattern...
1. I acted on the goals
2. I asked for help and sought for resources
3. I increased my network
4. I was desperate for result

1. I acted on the goals:
I prayed about it first and then I did my part towards actualizing the goal. If my goal was to receive a certain amount of money in scholarships, I saw it as my responsibility to write essays constantly and have them reviewed for the scholarships. I also participated in opportunities, so that when I am required to write a biography or an essay, I will have something to say.

2. I asked for help and sought for resources:
I am not afraid or ashamed of not knowing certain things. When I need information, I go to the necessary people and I say;
 - This is what I know
 - This is what I don't know
 - This is what I am willing to learn or this is what I want to know or what I need help with...

In addition, let the internet be your friend for good reasons. I am always searching for opportunities online. I read student success stories so that I can find the names of the programs, scholarships, or activities that they have participated in, that made them succeed and then if I am interested, I go ahead to apply for the same opportunities. I check people's pages on LinkedIn and their work experiences, to familiarize with them.

Seeking for resources is not limited to the internet. Always ask questions from the people that have what you want. Here is the tricky part; i
t is easy to be envious of the people who have what we don't have. I must emphasize that we should avoid being envious or jealous by all means. If you thank God for the life of those that are rich, rather than hate them for showing too much, riches will come to you. Avoid hating the people that have what you want, especially if that's the reason for your hate towards them.

3. I increased my network:
I have grown a network of people who are well informed and who have different perspectives from mine. I find it very disastrous to only be surrounded by people have the same level of knowledge as mine or people who only agree with my views. For example, I am a feminist but I am willing to have a discussion with someone who is not sexist but who also does not necessarily agree with my feminist views. The not so favorable thing is that they disagree with me but the fantastic thing is that I have expanded my knowledge. I now know how to better handle another person with that same perspective in a different situation.

4. I was desperate for result:
When I am working towards achieving my goal, my focus is on what I can do from here onward. Even when I make a mistake I say to myself, "Okay, that's gone, what next?" I review my progress and I keep my eyes on the goal. I also talk about my goals with my mentors, friends, and family. This is also a way to stay motivated because I know that if I slack, the people that know my goals will question me.

I hope this helps and motivates you to achieve your goals.
