I am woman and that's enough.
Why do I have to prove myself to you?
Why do I need your approval to be?
I don't need to be super to be strong,
the woman I am is strong and enough.
I don't need to be wild to be free,
the woman I am is enough to be free.
I don't need to be like a man to do enough,
the woman that I am can do enough.
I am a woman and that's enough
for me to be and to do.
I have not always been a fan of superhero movies. Especially with the emergence of heroines, I am hesitant about liking them and acknowledging them as feminist figures because I think they come from the perspective of "because men did it, we too must do it" rather than "we do it simply because we can." I am also not supportive of the idea of portraying men as necessary enemies for the emergence of a feminist figure. Most importantly I think that not all feminist stories start negatively with the logo of "they said because I am a girl, I can't do something." Some feminist stories start as: "I show affection to this sister," "I love this woman who is different from me in so many ways" or "I call a friend queen because she is worthy to be called such." These, to me are the beginnings of feminism that are yet to be told. One of the best movies and book that I have seen from this perspective is "For Colored Girls." The bond that this women shared was so full of love and support.
Bringing feminism from this perspective also combats the mentality that being the best that I can be is synonymous for trying to be "like a man." I am kind because I have the ability to be kind. I will be rich and successful not just because society expects that from men most of the time and I want to combat that notion but because I have the ability to do so. I want to put food to the table with my partner because I have the ability to do so. As a feminist I don't want to be like a man or want to prove myself. The woman in me is enough to be and to do.
Chimamanda Adichie once said that she hopes there will be a time when we will no longer need feminism. I want a time when a woman showing her strength and being her best is normal and expected.
