Religion is not an Insurance to Limit Females

11/7/2016

I refuse to limit my definition of being woman from the bible because I recognize my endless possibilities and my God-given abilities. What I am to myself in my ability as a service to God and in life is as important.

STOP USING PARTIAL WORDS OR VERSES TO BACK UP IDEAS THAT LIMIT FEMALES!!!

Nothing can compare to the disgust I feel when someone preaches that a woman should be far less than her God given ability and then back it up with “the scriptures.” It baffles me how many people are quick to separate success, victory, and leadership from women, Godliness and spirituality. To these type of people, it is supposedly not appropriate and good if a woman seeks to achieve more than her male counterpart when she possesses the ability to do so. They like to preach the part that calls for humility and submission of a woman to a man and how she must be so, in roles, character, chores and success while the part that rebukes people including women for not maximizing their talents is ignored. When preaching about how women can be, they avoid talking about people like Deborah, a woman so brave that led a war her male partner feared.

When discussing this topic of “being a helper,” it is discussed as if women are not important enough to even help themselves if they choose. It is thought and taught that the most acceptable help we can offer in this world should only be to men.
Even more elaborately when God commanded help in the context of Adam and Eve, he was discussing it in terms of marriage. However, that doesn't prescribe that - helping a man is all she is capable of doing. I love to see help in another light that empowers women. God thought to establish a fulfillment so great that has helped nations through a woman and like Sojourner Truth said, “…and man had nothing to do with it.” When I think about women helping men, I see them bringing important fulfillment into this world like Mary was empowered by God to birth Christ. A woman’s help should not be limited to a room, kitchen, roof or house, it should reach as far as she is blessed to touch.

Talking about women being “sinfully loud” for demanding their rights, when the female children of Zelophehad were not given some inheritance because of their gender, they spoke up and asked for their own fair share. This, to me is what true feminism means. Feminism is when a woman asks for her fair share because she worked to deserve it. I hate that religion has become an excuse to shut females up and feminism down.

I refuse to limit my definition of being woman from the bible because I recognize my endless possibilities and my God-given abilities. What I am to myself in my ability as a service to God and in life is as important. These women from the scriptures are few but they are worth talking about. Maybe more women will stop limiting themselves or shutting their mouths about their plights if those parts of the scriptures are emphasized often.

Stop manipulating how women think of themselves by using religious contexts as an excuse.
