With this collection, I must confess, I gasped for my blackness and heritage over and over again. Upile's book, Soft Magic, teaches me a flamboyant and unapologetic way to be black. It makes me fall in love with womanhood through another light. She writes about love and the melancholy it could bring. Upile words emotions in a way that teaches self proclamation. Her words are beautiful in describing motherhood, the strength and responsibilities that accompany it. Her poems are bluntly feminist, bold and magic.
I love this book and it is a collection that I will not hesitate to read over again.
