“You are the average of 5 people that you constantly surround yourself with.”
The first time I heard this statement, it hit me like a deliverance session would. I could immediately imagine 5 people that I have constantly surrounded myself with and one trait that I have picked from each person.
Similar to the adage that says birds of the same feather flock together, I believe that if you want to be a better person and you want to grow, you have to consciously surround yourself with people that possess similar desires as yours. If you are the type that has big dreams and aspirations, you are likely to tell one or more of those five people about your goals. I will also draw from one of Steve Harvey's quotes in a life class hosted by Oprah Winfrey. He said, you cannot keep telling small minded people your big dreams. They just will never get it and will hardly support you in it.
If you are like a thermometer and likely to be influenced by your environment and people that surround you, don’t stay in the midst of who and what will waste your worth. If you are a thermostat that controls and sets the heat for the environment that you stay in, and you are the type that influences people, please do so positively.
I will not say that you should cut off everyone in your life, although checking some people out of your life may be needed. However, understand and think about how much the people in your life influence your ability to succeed. It is easier to push a wheel barrow of success up a hill when you have people pushing it with you. It is not advisable to entertain people that will just sit on the wheel barrow to watch you as you push or nag about how slow and lazy you are or will contribute more burden than ease to your life’s success.
